Southwest Mississippi Baseball Recognizes Sophomores During Loss to Baton Rouge
Southwest Mississippi Baseball celebrated its sophomores during a game against Baton Rouge Community College on March 23. The team recognized 11 players, including Cam Bolden, Will McLeod, Tanner Moore, and others, along with manager Joseph Tipton and student coach Cody Wood.
Following the ceremony, the Bears faced Baton Rouge in a back-and-forth contest that extended into extra innings. Camp Segrest made his season debut on the mound, pitching two innings with one strikeout. Several other pitchers, including Ian Edwards, Nathan Carter, and Luke Simmons, each contributed one inning.
Luke Simmons was charged with the loss for Southwest. The game featured a high level of offensive activity, with both teams trading hits and runs. In the ninth inning, Baton Rouge scored two runs to take a 12-10 lead, but Southwest responded with two to tie the game at 12. Baton Rouge then scored four runs in the 10th inning to secure the victory, holding Southwest scoreless in the bottom half.
Walker Wixon led Southwest with three hits. JD Hidalgo, Drew Swan, and Hayes Loper each added two hits, with Swan, Loper, Luke Simmons, Tristain Haynes, and Tanner Moore recording doubles. Wixon and Loper each drove in three RBIs, while Wixon and Hidalgo had two RBIs apiece.
The Bears, now 20-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play, will travel to Ellisville on March 25 for a doubleheader against Jones College.
