The Bears’ offense was aggressive early, scoring nine of their 10 runs in the first four innings. They scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run sacrifice fly from Drew Swan and a run scored by Luke Simmons on a dropped third strike. Simmons later scored on a hit by Sam Tumminello.
Center fielder Tanner Moore hit the team’s first home run of the season, a solo shot that contributed to the early lead. In the third inning, the Bears added three more runs, including a wild pitch that allowed Drew Swan to score and a sacrifice fly from Cam Bolden to drive in JD Hidalgo. Luke Simmons scored again on a single from Drew Nelson, putting Southwest ahead 8-1.
In the fourth inning, Justin Domiano scored on a groundout by Drew Swan to increase the lead to 9-3. The final run came in the eighth inning, when Luke Simmons scored on a bunt single by Cam Bolden. Simmons and Bolden each finished with two hits, while Moore, Robbie Hokamp, and Drew Nelson each had one. Simmons scored three runs, and Moore, Domiano, and Hidalgo each drove in two runs. Several players, including Domiano, Nelson, Hidalgo, Simmons, and Moore, stole bases in the game.
Head coach Jack Edmonson praised the team’s effort, saying, “I thought we played offense and defense really well. It was a good opportunity to give some guys a shot to prove what they can do, and some of them took advantage of it. Overall, we are playing well, but we have to continue to get better each day.”
The Bears, now 11-3, are set to host Hinds and Co-Lin on Wednesday, February 25.
