Southern Miss’s Joey Urban repeats as Sun Belt Player of the Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss senior outfielder Joey Urban (Jupiter, Florida) has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the second straight time, league officials announced Tuesday.
Urban hit safely in all four games, boosting the Golden Eagles to a 10-1 record and a 10-game winning streak. He extended his hitting streak to six games and has now recorded at least one hit in 24 of his last 27 contests.
During the week, Urban posted a batting average of .471 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. He also drew six walks. In the opening game against Alabama, he went 1-for-3 with three runs, two walks, a double and an RBI, helping Southern Miss to a 14-4 victory in eight innings.
In a game against Louisiana Tech on Friday, Urban opened the scoring with a two-run homer and later doubled in the eighth inning as the Golden Eagles scored three runs to win 8-3. He continued his offensive surge Saturday, reaching base in all four plate appearances with three singles and a walk, and drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the 11-0 victory.
In Sunday’s win to complete the series sweep, Urban added an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run homer in the ninth for insurance. The Golden Eagles now prepare for a five-game homestand, starting Tuesday against Mississippi State at 6 p.m., followed by a midweek game versus Nicholls and a weekend series against North Alabama.
