Southern Miss Women’s Golf Finishes Sixth at Old Barnwell Invitational

AIKEN, S.C. — Savannah Van Gaalen shot a one-under 72 in the final round of the More Than Golf Invitational at Old Barnwell Golf Course, helping Southern Miss finish sixth overall. It was the team’s best round of the three-day event, according to school officials.

Van Gaalen moved up 16 spots in the individual standings, tying for 21st after posting five birdies, including three consecutive starting on hole 14. She scored 78 and 82 in the first two rounds. Her teammates, Fernanda Gorostiaga and Louise Cuyvers, also tied for 21st, with scores of 78-79-75 and 78-79-75, respectively.

Gorostiaga posted her second eagle in as many days after completing the par-4 14th hole in two strokes. Taylor Trible finished tied for 25th after a 76 in the final round, improving her position with four birdies. Liv Romer shot an 80, adding three birdies in her final round.

As a team, Southern Miss finished 10-over par, one stroke better than its first-round score. Columbia University captured the team title by 10 strokes, led by individual medalist Yu Zend, who finished four-under par.

Southern Miss is now preparing for the Magnolia Collegiate at Magnolia Grove Course in Mobile, Alabama, starting March 16. The team will look to improve on its sixth-place finish in upcoming tournaments, according to school officials.
