Southern Miss Women’s Golf advances to Great River Championship after wins over Arkansas State, Central Arkansas

The University of Southern Mississippi women’s golf team defeated Arkansas State and Central Arkansas on Monday at the Great River Cup in Gulfport, Mississippi. The Golden Eagles now advance to face ULM in the match play final at Windance Country Club.

Southern Miss opened with a 4-1 win over Arkansas State. Fernanda Gorostiaga led the way with a 6&5 victory, recording three birdies in a four-hole stretch. Savannah Van Gaalen secured her win after paring the eighth hole, with three birdies overall, including back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16.

Liv Romer added a point with a 4&3 win, making key birdies on the 18th and third holes. Louise Cuyvers clinched her match with a 7&6 victory, thanks to five birdies, including three consecutive starting at hole 14. Taylor Trible narrowly lost her match to Morgan Beaulieu, 1 up.

In the matchup against Central Arkansas, Cuyvers again led with a dominant 7&6 win, punctuated by five birdies. Romer secured her second win of the day at 2&1. Trible fought to a one-point victory, shooting even-par on the final hole after five total birdies.

Central Arkansas earned a half-point after Gorostiaga tied her match with Gudrun Thorsteinsdottir. Gaccion beat Van Gaalen 1 up, rallying with two birdies despite several bogeys. The Golden Eagles will play ULM at 8 a.m. Tuesday. ULM advanced after defeating Little Rock and Missouri State. The third-place game features Central Arkansas and Missouri State.
