Southern Miss Softball Set for Weekend Series at App State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Mississippi softball travels to Boone, North Carolina, for a weekend series against Appalachian State. The series begins Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern time, with coverage available on ESPN+.
The Golden Eagles (20-12, Sun Belt Conference 2-1) are coming off an 8-1 loss to UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. They are seeking to improve their 3-6 record on the road this season at App State, in only the second three-game series between the programs. Southern Miss holds a 4-2 all-time series lead and has never played in Boone.
Southern Miss averages five runs per game and ranks first nationally in SAC flies (20). The team is also among the top 16 nationally in fielding percentage (.979) and triples (10). Hannah Christian leads the team with a .418 batting average and 46 hits, ranking 11th in the nation. Seven Golden Eagles are batting .300 or better through 32 games.
On the pitching mound, Kayla Giardina leads the team with a 2.12 ERA, a .99 WHIP, and seven complete games. She also ranks among the top 25 in the country in complete games and innings pitched (89.0).
App State opened conference play with a series against Coastal Carolina, winning the first game but losing two close contests. The Mountaineers’ game against N.C. Central was postponed until April 15. Makayla McClain leads the team with a .457 batting average, 13 home runs, and 36 RBIs.
Two Appalachian State pitchers meet the minimum inning requirement, with Sophie Moshos posting a 2.09 ERA. Freshman Camryn Fisher leads the team with 76 strikeouts and complete games.
Southern Miss leads the all-time series 4-2, including a 2-1 record in Boone. The last meeting was in Hattiesburg on April 27, when App State won 3-2, preventing a sweep.
