Southern Miss Softball Hosts Nicholls in Midweek Game at Home
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss softball hosts Nicholls on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Golden Eagles (22-13, Sun Belt 4-2) previously defeated the Colonels (19-12, Southland 7-2) 7-3 on Feb. 25.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available. It also features a “Greek Night” theme and a canned food drive organized by the Southern Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Southern Miss is coming off its second straight conference win following a weekend series against Appalachian State. The team opened Sun Belt play with back-to-back series wins for the first time since 2014, beating UTEP and Middle Tennessee. The Eagles secured a 13-10 victory in the rubber match against Appalachian State, setting a program record with six home runs in a single game, surpassing the previous record of five set in 2021.
Several players are nationally ranked. Abbi Troquille is tied for second in the nation with 15 hit-by-pitches. Hannah Christian ranks fifth in hits with 51. Nealy McManus is among the top 10 in assists with 81. Kayce Bennett is in the top 25 in caught stealing with eight. Kayla Giardina ranks in the top 35 in innings pitched (89.2) and holds a 1.01 WHIP, while Madilyn Graham is among the top 20 in shutouts with three.
The Eagles are tied for first nationally in sacrifice flies (21) and rank highly in several other categories, including fielding percentage (0.980), hit-by-pitches (31), walks (137), and sacrifice bunts (22). They also rank in the top 45 nationally in hits (271) and have an on-base percentage of 0.418, third in the Sun Belt.
Southern Miss leads the series against Nicholls 15-13, including an 8-6 record at home. The Eagles are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings with the Colonels and won earlier this season on the road, 7-3.
