Southern Miss softball falls 5-4 to Southeastern La. in close game
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss softball (27-16, Sun Belt 8-4) was edged by Southeastern Louisiana (34-9, Southland 15-0) 5-4 Wednesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Carrie Green went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, marking her 10th multi-hit game of the season, according to school officials. McCall Davis, who suffered her first loss of the season, pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and two walks.
The Lions took an early lead, scoring once in the second inning on an infield single by Kailey Dixon. Southeastern extended its lead to 4-0 in the third with an RBI single that scored two runners, followed by a wild pitch that brought in another run.
Southern Miss responded in the bottom half of the inning. Christian stole second and later scored on Green’s single down the left field line to cut the deficit to 4-1. Davis replaced Madilyn Graham in the circle and recorded the final out of the inning.
The Golden Eagles narrowed the gap further in the sixth inning. After a leadoff double by Madison Johnson and a walk by Kinsley Gordon-Sivley, Jolie Hays reached on an error, scoring one run. Abbi Troquille’s fielder’s choice scored another, tying the game at 4-4.
Southeastern regained the lead in the seventh inning. A leadoff single and a throwing error put two runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Green brought in the go-ahead run, giving the Lions a 5-4 victory. Southern Miss threatened in the bottom of the inning with a hit by pitch and a single, but back-to-back lineouts ended the game with Southeastern on top.
