Southern Miss rallies late to beat No. 11 Oregon State at Round Rock Classic

ROUND ROCK, Texas — The University of Southern Mississippi scored in each of the final four innings and secured a 9-4 victory over No. 11 Oregon State at the Round Rock Classic on Saturday night. The Golden Eagles, ranked 20th nationally, improved to 5-1 and extended their winning streak to five games, marking their first-ever win over the Beavers.

Southern Miss’s offense was led by Joey Urban, who had three hits and four RBIs. Urban put the Golden Eagles ahead early with an opposite-field home run off OSU starter Ethan Kleinschmit in the first inning. Kleinschmit later allowed a walk and a single but retired 14 straight hitters afterward.

Grayden Harris pitched well for Southern Miss, striking out six of the first eight batters he faced. Harris allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk while earning the win in his season debut. His only costly inning was the fourth, when Oregon State took a 3-1 lead on Jacob Krieg’s homer. Harris finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and moved to 1-0.

Southern Miss responded in the sixth, capitalizing on Kleinschmit’s exit. Urban tripled and scored on a single by Matthew Russo. Davis Gillespie then homered over the left-field wall, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead. Kleinschmit was charged with four runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts in five innings.

The Golden Eagles added three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Urban’s two-RBI single and Gillespie’s sacrifice fly. They continued to add insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings, with Urban and Kyle Morrison driving in runs to finalize the score. Camden Sunstrom pitched the last four innings to earn his first career save, striking out four with no walks and allowing one unearned run.

Southern Miss will face Baylor on Sunday at 3 p.m. in their final game of the tournament, aiming for an undefeated record in the event. Oregon State, now 4-2, will look to regroup after the loss.
