Southern Miss Men’s Tennis Sweeps Jackson State, Loses to Samford

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s tennis team posted a dominant 4-0 victory over Jackson State on Friday in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles secured the doubles point early, with wins at courts one and two, and completed the sweep with three straight-set singles wins.

Saheb Sodhi and Eric Perkowski won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, while Kale Mize and Jay Temming took No. 2 doubles, 6-1. In singles, Jose Murariu defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2, followed by Perkowski’s 6-2, 6-3 victory. Matei Varbanciu closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles fell 4-0 to Samford in Birmingham. The match was competitive, with Mize and Murariu pushing their singles matches into third sets. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs secured the necessary points to clinch the win. Southern Miss moved to 2-2 on the season after the loss.

The team is scheduled to return home to face Alcorn State on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.
