Southern Miss Golfer Benjamin Fernandez Named Sun Belt Player of the Month
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Benjamin Fernandez, a junior golfer at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Month, the league announced Friday.
Fernandez opened the spring season with his best round of his career, shooting a five-under 65 at the Hal Williams Collegiate. He finished in the top three in back-to-back tournaments, posting a 68.33 scoring average. His efforts helped Southern Miss secure second-place finishes at both events, finishing behind No. 13 Illinois at the Hal Williams Collegiate and just two strokes behind the leader at the Dorado Beach Collegiate.
Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher praised Fernandez’s professionalism and maturity. “Since arriving at Southern Miss, Ben has matured and grown into his potential,” Brescher said. “He handles himself as a professional because he aspires to be one after college.”
Brescher also highlighted Fernandez’s resilience in challenging moments. “In both tournaments, Ben had rules situations where his golf ball was found after a three-minute search. Unfortunately, both times it led to triple bogeys. But he handled both situations like a pro, shook it off, and still posted rounds of par or better,” he added.
Fernandez finished third in both tournaments, ending the Hal Williams Collegiate at 12-under 198 and shooting four-under 212 at the Dorado Beach Collegiate. The Golden Eagles will next compete March 15-17 at the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida.
