Southern Miss Beats Troy 69-65 Behind Weeks’ Second-Half Surge
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Tylik Weeks scored 30 points in the second half to help Southern Miss rally for a 69-65 victory over Troy on Saturday night, according to the university’s athletics department.
The Golden Eagles improved to 14-14 overall and 7-8 in Sun Belt play. Troy fell to 17-10 and 9-5 in conference. The win marked Southern Miss’s ninth of the season at Reed Green Coliseum, extending their home winning streak to 44 games over the last four seasons, the department said.
Weeks’ second-half scoring outburst was complemented by a career-high 18 rebounds from Djahi Binet, who added 14 points for his ninth double-double of the season. Isaac Taveras scored 11 points, while Curt Lewis finished with eight. Binet also contributed a season-high eight offensive rebounds and seven blocks, tying his career best.
Southern Miss maintained the same starting lineup — Izzy Hart, Tylik Weeks, Isaac Taveras, Dylan Brumfield, and Binet — and led early, with Taveras scoring the team’s first points on a layup. The Eagles led 16-14 at the eight-minute mark of the first half but ended the period tied at 26 after Troy scored a late basket.
In the second half, Troy opened with five straight points before Weeks took over, scoring 16 consecutive points for the Eagles. The Trojans pushed their lead to five with 12 minutes remaining, but Southern Miss responded with a 12-1 run, capped by a jumper from Binet that put the Eagles ahead. Weeks scored eight straight points during that stretch, helping secure the win.
Southern Miss finished with 10 steals and eight blocks, nearly matching season highs. They also tied their season high of 18 offensive rebounds, previously set against ULM on Jan. 1. The team’s defense forced 15 turnovers, and Dylan Brumfield led in assists with five.
The Eagles will have a week off before hosting Old Dominion on Feb. 21 in their final home game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., and tickets are available through the university’s athletic department.
