Southern Miss beats Troy 11-5 on Parrothead Day at Pete Taylor Park
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team celebrated Parrothead Day with an 11-5 victory over Troy on Saturday at Pete Taylor Park. The 12th-ranked Golden Eagles improved to 18-5 overall and 2-3 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Troy fell to 10-12 and 3-2 in league play.
Southern Miss scored in six different innings, starting with a run in the first on a wild pitch. Davis Gillespie reached on a misplayed fly ball, advanced on a single by Matthew Russo, and scored on the wild pitch. Troy answered in the second, taking a 2-1 lead with a three-hit rally capped by Sean Darnell’s two-run single.
Joey Urban put the Golden Eagles back in front in the second with a two-RBI single after Stockman was hit by a pitch and Seth Smith laid down a bunt single. Gillespie homered in the third to extend the lead, his fifth of the year. Southern Miss added another run in the fifth and pushed the lead to 8-2 with RBIs from Russo and Drey Barrett.
Troy chipped away at the deficit, scoring three runs over the seventh and eighth innings, including an RBI double from Josh Pyne and a run-scoring single by Darnell, who finished with three RBIs. The Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a single from Russo and a bases-loaded walk to Stockman.
Kros Sivley earned the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He improved to 3-0. Troy starter Dylan Alonso took the loss after giving up four runs in five-plus innings. The series continues Sunday at 1 p.m., with the game available on ESPN+ and the Southern Miss Sports Network.
