Southern Miss Baseball wins series with 13-4 victory over Appalachian State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss baseball defeated Appalachian State 13-4 Sunday at Pete Taylor Park, earning the series win. The No. 11 Golden Eagles improved to 21-7 overall and 5-4 in Sun Belt Conference play.

Senior Joey Urban highlighted the game with a grand slam, his eighth home run of the season. Freshman Gray Eubanks contributed three hits and three RBIs as Southern Miss hit three home runs in a game for the first time since April 2025.

The Golden Eagles scored six runs in the second inning, sparked by doubles from Davis Gillespie and Matthew Russo. Urban’s grand slam followed, giving the team an early 6-0 lead. Appalachian State responded with three runs in the third, cutting the lead to 6-3, but that was as close as they would get.

Southern Miss added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and Kyle Morrison’s solo homer in the sixth. Morrison later hit a two-run homer in the eighth to finish with two home runs and five RBIs. JW Armistead earned the win in relief, improving to 1-0 this season. Appalachian State starter Conner Barozzino took the loss, falling to 0-2.

The Golden Eagles will host Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday for the next game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the game available via live stats and radio broadcast.
