Southern Miss baseball rallies in ninth to beat Southeastern Louisiana 3-1
HAMMOND, La. — Southern Miss defeated Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 Tuesday night at Pat Kenelly Stadium, rallying for two runs in the ninth inning. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1 with the win, their third consecutive victory.
Joey Urban and Matthew Russo each delivered run-scoring singles in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie. A pinch-hitter, Seth Smith, singled with two outs before Urban’s single scored Smith. Russo’s hit scored Kyle Morrison, giving Southern Miss a two-run lead.
Cameron Clark, the eighth pitcher used by the Golden Eagles, closed the game with a quick three-out inning to earn his second save. Nick Gisclair, Southeastern Louisiana’s seventh pitcher, took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Pitching dominated early, with neither team scoring until the seventh. Davis Gillespie homered to left center off Triston Todorowski for Southern Miss’s first run. The Lions answered in the eighth with a sacrifice fly from Brooks Wright that tied the game at 1-1.
Josh Och, the seventh pitcher for Southern Miss, earned the win, improving to 2-0. He pitched an inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Starter Camden Sunstrom pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit.
Southern Miss will continue its stretch of road games at the Round Rock Classic this weekend, facing Purdue, Oregon State, and Baylor. The team’s next game is scheduled for Friday against Purdue at 2 p.m.
