Southern Miss Baseball Hosts Troy for Sun Belt Series and Parrothead Weekend
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team hosts Troy this weekend at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m., with the annual Parrothead game scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., featuring Jimmy Buffett tribute music and merchandise sales.
All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Southern Miss Sports Network affiliates. Gates will open two hours before Saturday’s game, and Lloyd Munn and the Forecasters will perform prior to the contest. Parrothead merchandise will be available at Campus Book Mart, the Southern Miss Barnes and Noble Bookstore, and at Pete Taylor Park throughout the weekend, while supplies last.
The Golden Eagles enter the series with a 17-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Sun Belt play. They are coming off a 4-0 win over Nicholls on Tuesday. The team is tied for the second-best 21-game start in school history, behind only the 2004 squad that started 18-3.
Troy, with a 9-11 record, opened Sun Belt play last weekend by winning two of three games against Old Dominion. The Trojans have won their last three contests, including an 11-2 victory over Alabama State on Tuesday. Senior second baseman Kyle Morrison leads Troy with a .347 batting average, six home runs, and 21 RBIs. He has an eight-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games. Joe Urban, a senior center fielder, is batting .342 with seven homers and 21 RBIs, while junior shortstop Seth Smith is hitting .305 with a homer and 12 RBIs.
Southern Miss has adjusted its weekend pitching rotation, with sophomore left-hander Grayden Harris (4-0, 2.33 ERA) taking the mound Friday. The team has yet to announce starters for Saturday, but redshirt sophomore right-hander McCarty English (1-1, 2.30 ERA) will start Sunday. After the Troy series, the Golden Eagles will travel to face Mississippi State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
