Southern Miss Baseball Hosts App State for Sun Belt Series
The Southern Miss baseball team will host Appalachian State in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Southern Miss Sports Network affiliates, as well as through SouthernMiss.com.
Saturday’s game will be Military Appreciation Day, with the team wearing special uniforms inspired by Camp Shelby. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 11, hold a 5-1 series lead over the Mountaineers, with the teams first meeting at last year’s Sun Belt Tournament.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 19-6 record overall and a 3-3 mark in the Sun Belt. The team recently suffered a 12-0 loss at Mississippi State but earned a series victory against Troy last weekend. The Golden Eagles are tied for fourth place in the league standings, behind Coastal Carolina, Marshall and ULM.
Senior Kyle Morrison leads the team with a .337 batting average, including eight home runs and 24 RBIs. Fellow seniors Joey Urban and Davis Gillespie are also key contributors, batting .326 and .319 respectively, with seven and six homers.
On the mound, sophomore Grayden Harris (4-1, 3.34 ERA) will start Friday’s game for the second consecutive week. Sophomore Camden Sunstrom (2-1, 2.22 ERA) will open Saturday’s contest, while Sunday’s starter has yet to be decided. Following the series, Southern Miss will host Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m.
