Southern Miss Baseball Completes Series Sweep with 9-2 Win Over North Alabama
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss baseball wrapped up a series sweep Sunday with a 9-2 win over North Alabama at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 10 nationally, improved to 14-2, marking their third consecutive weekend series win this season.
Starting pitcher McCarty English earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and surrendered only three hits and one walk. The Lions fell to 7-9 overall.
Offensively, Davis Gillespie and Kyle Morrison each had two hits and drove in three runs to lead Southern Miss. Gillespie opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, his third of the season, following a walk by Joey Urban and a short popout by Matthew Russo. Ben Higdon added a home run of his own in the same inning, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Southern Miss extended its lead in the seventh inning, scoring four runs. The frame started with consecutive walks by Russo and Gillespie. After a sacrifice bunt by Higdon, Drey Barrett walked, and Morrison cleared the bases with a triple. Caleb Stelly capped the inning with an RBI single.
The Eagles added one more run in the eighth on an RBI double by Barrett. North Alabama scored both its runs in the eighth inning, capitalizing on walks, a single, and a wild pitch, but it was not enough to catch the home team.
North Alabama starter Josh Stogner pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He took the loss, falling to 1-1. Southern Miss will host Ole Miss in a midweek game Tuesday at 6 p.m., closing out a six-game homestand.
Next up, the Golden Eagles aim to continue their winning streak as they prepare for their next series, according to team officials.
