South Alabama edges Southern Miss 84-78 despite Weeks’ 25-point effort
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss men’s basketball team lost to South Alabama 84-78 Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum. Despite a career-high seven assists from Tylik Weeks and 25 points, the Golden Eagles could not overcome the Jaguars’ hot shooting, according to game officials.
Southern Miss (13-14, 6-8 Sun Belt) led early but fell behind after South Alabama (18-7, 8-4 Sun Belt) went on a 9-0 run in the first half. The Jaguars maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half, though the Golden Eagles made several pushes to close the gap.
Weeks shot 6-for-15 from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, and made 11 of 15 free throws. Djahi Binet posted his eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Izzy Hart added 11 points, including three three-pointers, for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles struggled with turnovers, committing a season-high 21, and missed 16 free throws, which impacted their chances in the final minutes. South Alabama, led by Jayden Cooper’s 34 points, made 4 of 4 free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory. Southern Miss made 22 of 28 free throws overall.
