Softball falls to Millsaps 8-4 in series finale

Jackson, Miss. — The Western University softball team lost its final game of a three-game series at Millsaps College, 8-4, on Sunday. The Owls (4-5) were swept by the Majors (7-2) over the weekend.

MUW appeared to salvage the final game after dropping Saturday’s doubleheader. The Owls scored first on a sacrifice squeeze by Addison Owen, which brought Gillion Eaves home from third. Millsaps responded with a tying run in the bottom of the first inning.

Starting pitcher Brooklyn Rhodes helped her own cause with an RBI double in the fifth inning, giving MUW a 2-1 lead. However, Rhodes struggled in the sixth, failing to record an out after hitting the leadoff batter, issuing a walk, and allowing a single to load the bases. Millsaps then hit a grand slam, flipping the scoreboard in favor of the hosts.

Rhodes was replaced by Phallyn Clark, but the Majors continued to hit well, scoring seven runs in the inning. Despite her pitching struggles, Rhodes led MUW at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Owen and Avery Johnston also had multi-hit games, each going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively. Madison York and Kaitlyn Bearley each doubled in the game.

The Owls will host Millsaps in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. in Columbus, Mississippi.
