Prairie View A&M Dominates Alcorn in Series Opener with 12-0 Win

Prairie View A&M scored in every inning and used a strong pitching performance from Kayla Adams to beat Alcorn 12-0 in five innings Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex. The Southwestern Athletic Conference series opener saw the Panthers improve to 12-11 overall and 4-0 in SWAC play.

Prairie View quickly took control, scoring three runs in the first inning off Alcorn starting pitcher Chiara Olison. Designated player Kayla Zaid drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a wild pitch before Jade Uresti’s bunt single. Mia Nunez and Morgan Smith each hit sacrifice flies to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead, and Ashlee Elizarraras doubled home another run to make it 3-0.

Nunez delivered a key hit in the second inning, ripping a two-run triple to left center to push the margin to 5-0. Smith added an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 6-0. Nunez finished with four RBIs, including three sacrifice flies, and went 1-for-1 at the plate.

In the fourth inning, third baseman Kendall McCants tripled and scored on a groundout by Maritza Martinez, making it 9-0. The Panthers added three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from pinch hitter Za’Riya Bell-Morris that scored Caidence Martin and Reagan Green, ending the game via run rule.

Alcorn managed only two hits — singles by Olivia Miller and Yahnya Acevedo. Adams (7-4) threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout with two strikeouts and one walk. Olison, the losing pitcher, allowed three runs on three hits in one inning. Miller pitched the final four innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits with five walks and a strikeout.

The two teams will play the second game of the series as part of a doubleheader Saturday, March 14, starting at 1 p.m. Follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter (@BravesSports) for updates, and on Instagram (@AlcornSports) and YouTube (Braves Sports Network) for more coverage.
