Prairie View A&M defeats Jackson State 9-0 in SWAC opener

Prairie View A&M opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference series with Jackson State with a 9-0 victory Friday night at Braddy Field.

The Tigers (10-13, 1-3 SWAC) were held to three hits. Robert Tate Jr., Wilbert Perez and Hederick Torres each had a single for Jackson State.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the fifth inning and never relinquished it. John Lawson reached on an error, advanced to third on a throw, and scored on the play. Sonnier Moses also scored on the throw, giving Prairie View A&M a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers extended their lead in the sixth inning with a series of RBI singles, including one by Corie Lockette, and a sacrifice fly from Basilio Williams. Prairie View A&M added to its lead in the seventh inning with a walk and a single that scored two runs. Tyvon Moore doubled in the eighth to drive in another run, and Ethan Walker doubled in the ninth to cap the scoring, making it 9-0.

Derek Arrocha (1-2) took the loss for Jackson State, working six innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

The two teams are scheduled to play the second game of the series Saturday at 3 p.m., which will be broadcast on SWAC TV.
