Owls Women’s Tennis Secures First Win of Season with 4-3 Victory at LaGrange
LaGrange, Ga. — Mississippi University for Women’s women’s tennis team recorded its first victory of the season with a 4-3 win against LaGrange College on Friday morning.
The Owls started strong by capturing the doubles point. With only five players on the trip, MUW had to win both doubles matches to secure the team point. Austin Hays and Bailey Flynn won at first doubles in a tight 7-6 decision. Kayleigh Griffin and Alaina Mathis secured the second doubles win, giving the Owls the lead.
The teams entered singles play tied at 1-1 after MUW forfeited No. 6 singles. The singles matches then became a race to three wins. Kayleigh Griffin’s teammate, Bailey Flynn, split her sets at No. 3 singles, winning the first 6-3, losing the second 6-2, then taking the third in a 10-4 pro set.
LaGrange responded with a three-set victory at first singles, evening the match at 2-2. Alaina Mathis, a sophomore, extended MUW’s lead with a dominant straight-set win at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. LaGrange kept pace with a three-set win at second singles, making it 3-3.
The match came down to No. 5 singles, where MUW freshman Harley Lowry faced senior Abby Fuller. Lowry won the first set 6-3 but lost a tight second set 7-6. In the decisive third set, Lowry pulled away with a 10-5 victory, sealing the win for the Owls.
MUW improved to 1-2 overall with the victory. The team will continue its season with upcoming matches.
