Owls Women Win on the Road Against Westminster, 66-60

The University of the Ozarks women’s basketball team defeated Westminster College 66-60 in a road game Tuesday night. The game was a makeup of a postponed contest from Jan. 24 and was played at Westminster’s Historic Gym.

The Owls (6-16, 5-9 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) led for most of the game, building a 29-18 halftime lead after outscoring Westminster 16-7 in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Calysia Phillips with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter gave MUW its largest lead at 42-30.

Westminster chipped away at the lead in the final quarter and took its first lead since the start of the game at 57-56 with 1:40 left. Rhianna Dinkins then hit a clutch three-pointer from the left corner to put the Owls ahead for good. MUW made four of six free throws in the final minute to seal the win, outscoring Westminster 7-1 in the closing stretch.

Despite playing most of the game without leading scorer Mia Bowen, who was in foul trouble, the Owls received significant contributions from others. Phillips led all scorers with 20 points, making 10 of 11 free throws, and added four rebounds and three blocks. Conley Langford scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, and contributed four rebounds, three assists, and six steals. Fantasia Wilson added 11 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Dinkins and Jakayla Smith each scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

The teams will meet again Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Columbus.
