Owls softball falls twice at No. 9 Huntingdon in final tune-up games
Montgomery, Alabama — The Mississippi University for Women softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against NCAA Division III No. 9-ranked Huntingdon College on the road Saturday. The Owls, who are preparing for their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule, fell 9-1 and 8-0, both called after five innings by the run rule.
In the first game, MUW managed only two hits, with leadoff hitter Gillion Eaves going 1-for-3 and scoring a run, and Avery Johnston going 1-for-2. Freshman Trinity Garvin took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, over 1.2 innings. She was aided by Rachel Etheridge, who threw the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one run.
Huntingdon scored seven runs in the second inning of game one, putting the game out of reach early. The Hawks also scored in the first and third innings, with the game ending after the fifth inning due to the run rule.
In the second game, Huntingdon scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second, and one in the third, before winning with a walk-off run in the fifth. Phallyn Clark was charged with seven runs in three innings, while Kaylee Crawford threw 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run. Addison Owen led MUW offensively in game two, going 2-for-2, while Garvin, serving as the designated hitter, recorded the team’s only extra-base hit with a leadoff double in the second inning.
