Owls men’s tennis opens UMAC South with dominant win over Principia
COLUMBUS, Miss. — The W’s men’s tennis team hosted its first conference match on Garrett Courts and defeated Principia College 6-1, marking a historic moment for the program.
The Owls improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the UMAC South Division with the win. Principia fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
MUW set the tone early by sweeping doubles matches. The No. 3 team of Josh Cooper and Alvaro Bardales won 6-0, while Jorge Ortiz and Sandro Giangregorio took a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at second doubles.
In singles play, the Owls won five of six matches, all in straight sets. Bardales, at No. 6 singles, secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory and was perfect in both doubles and singles. Garcia defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles, and Fernandez won 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles to clinch the team victory.
The Panthers’ lone win came at second singles, where Jorge Ortiz defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-2. Giangregorio closed out the day for MUW with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
