Owls Men’s Tennis Opens Spring with Win; Women’s Team Falls

The Mississippi University for Women’s men’s tennis team started its spring season with a 4-0 win over Rust College at the Garrett Courts, according to school officials. The Owls’ women’s team fell 4-1 to the Bearcats.

It was the first college coaching victory for MUW’s Hayden Embry. The men’s team secured the doubles point with wins at first and second doubles. Jorge Ortiz and Josh Cooper defeated their opponents 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker). Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez won 6-0, giving MUW an early lead.

In singles play, Alvaro Bardales won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, improving his record to 3-0 this season. Juan Garcia notched his first victory as an Owl with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Marcos Fernandez sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles. Both teams had played an exhibition match earlier, leading to the suspension of remaining matches in progress.

On the women’s side, sophomore Alaina Mathis earned the team’s lone win with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 7-5. Mathis is now 2-0 for the season. The teams are scheduled to next compete on Feb. 13 at LaGrange College in Georgia.
