Owl Women Break Losing Streak With Win Over Eureka

COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women women’s basketball team ended a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 91-62 win over Eureka College at Pohl Gym.

The victory improved the Owls’ record to 5-15 overall and 4-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With four league games remaining, MUW is one game behind Greenville University for the sixth and final spot in the SLIAC tournament, according to sources.

Senior forwards Mia Bowen and Conley Langford led the way with double-doubles. Bowen scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, shooting 13-for-19 from the field and making her only three-point attempt. It marked her 10th double-double of the season and her 19th game with double-digit points. Langford added 14 points and 11 rebounds, extending her school record for career double-doubles to 23. She made two field goals but went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Freshman guard Jakayla Smith, a former New Hope High School player, scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was perfect at the free-throw line. Smith also contributed nine rebounds despite standing just 5-foot-2. Other contributors included Calysia Phillips and Rhianna Dinkins with eight points each. Phillips also led all players with five assists, while Fantasia Wilson recorded five steals for MUW.

The Owls will next face Principia College on Saturday, February 14, at 1 p.m. in Elsah, Illinois.
