Ole Miss Women’s Tennis to Face No. 1 Georgia and No. 17 South Carolina in Road Matches

The University of Mississippi women’s tennis team will compete in its first SEC road matches of the season this week, facing No. 1 Georgia and No. 17 South Carolina.

The Rebels, with a 6-1 record and a 1-0 mark in conference play, are coming off a victory over LSU and will look to add more ranked wins against formidable opponents. They travel to Athens, Georgia, to take on the top-ranked Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Georgia, the reigning NCAA champion, has maintained its top ranking this spring. The Bulldogs boast six ranked singles players and four ranked doubles pairings. They recently defeated South Carolina in their SEC opener, which was their first conference match of the season.

Following the matchup in Georgia, Ole Miss heads to Columbia, South Carolina, for a 1 p.m. match against the No. 17 Gamecocks at the Carolina Tennis Center. South Carolina has posted wins over several ranked teams, including No. 54 Miami, No. 59 Georgia Tech, No. 21 Clemson, and No. 43 Charlotte.

Last week, Ole Miss sophomore Helena Buchwald defeated No. 7 Aysegul Mert of Georgia in straight sets during their conference opener. The Gamecocks feature one ranked singles player and three doubles pairs ranked nationally.

Ole Miss is currently ranked 32nd nationally, with No. 11 Emily Welker leading the singles rankings among the Rebels. The team also features several newcomers, including highly touted freshmen Riley Crowder and Owen Wilkinson, both ranked as top recruits in their respective states.
