Ole Miss routs Alcorn 11-1 in nonconference baseball game
Oxford, Mississippi — No. 25 Ole Miss defeated Alcorn State 11-1 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Swayze Field.
The Rebels drew 18 walks and scored 11 runs in a seven-inning, run-rule victory. Ole Miss (23-11) worked counts against Alcorn pitchers, forcing free passes that contributed to their offensive success.
Starting pitcher Yoni Castro lasted two innings, allowing four runs and two hits while issuing six walks. Reliever José Cherena pitched two scoreless innings, walking four and striking out two. Five Braves pitchers combined for 18 walks overall.
Dom Decker led Ole Miss offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a stolen base. Shortstop Owen Paino reached base five times with three walks, a hit, and three RBIs. Tristan Bissetta also reached five times, going 2-for-2 with three walks, a double, and two stolen bases. Judd Utermark added a two-run double, and Austin Fawley drove in a run to round out the Rebels’ attack.
Alcorn’s only run came in the fifth inning when designated hitter Clayvonjae Wright hit a solo home run. On the mound, Ole Miss starter Grayson Gibson struck out four in two scoreless innings, and Leo Odom earned the win in relief, striking out five over 1.2 innings.
The Rebels sealed the game with a three-run seventh inning, triggering the run rule. Alcorn (7-26) was led at the plate by Kanious Davis, who went 2-for-3.
