Ole Miss edges Mississippi State 68-67 in men’s basketball thriller
Ole Miss edged Mississippi State 68-67 Saturday night at Humphrey Coliseum, renewing the rivalry in a closely contested game. The Rebels scored the final basket on a Patton Pinkins jumper with 19 seconds remaining, sealing the victory.
Mississippi State led by as many as 11 points early in the second half but was unable to hold off Ole Miss, which tied the game seven times and led 13 times. The Bulldogs led 30-27 at halftime. Despite a late rally, State’s Josh Hubbard missed a driving layup in traffic in the closing seconds.
Mississippi State moved to 7-2 this season and remains 56-9 under coach Chris Jans when leading at halftime over the last four seasons. The Bulldogs out-rebounded Ole Miss 46-43 and scored 18 of their 24 field goals in the paint.
Hubbard scored 13 points, passing Dee Bost for seventh on State’s all-time scoring list with 1,641 points. He extended his school record to 65 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer. Jayden Epps led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Shawn Jones Jr. added six points and four rebounds.
Ole Miss’s Patton Pinkins led all scorers with a midrange jumper in the final seconds. The Rebels shot 40.8% from the floor and made 2 of 20 three-pointers. They improved to 7-2 this season.
Mississippi State faces Texas A&M on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are 56-14 under Jans when holding opponents under 70 points and 40+ rebounds in a game.
