The University of Mississippi Athletics and Children’s of Mississippi have partnered to honor pediatric patients through the Kid Coach program. This week, Evan Renfroe of Lena is featured as the program’s Kid Coach, inspiring fans and players alike.
At 17, Evan was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, the most severe form of the condition. The spinal cord protrudes through an opening in the back, often leading to paralysis of the legs. He arrived at Children’s of Mississippi when he was 3 months old and has received multidisciplinary care ever since.
Evan has worked with specialists in neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, orthotics, and physical therapy. He is scheduled to return later this summer for hip surgery and ongoing follow-up, with plans to transfer to adult care in the coming years.
Despite a challenging 2025, Evan remains active and positive. He enjoys music, outdoor activities, and plays wheelchair basketball for the Mississippi Wheelcats. His story exemplifies resilience and determination, according to Children’s of Mississippi.
Ole Miss fans will see Evan at Saturday’s game, where he will serve as Kid Coach. The program aims to celebrate young patients and showcase their courage, with the university and Children’s of Mississippi cheering for Evan and all children facing health challenges.
