NWCC Women’s Tennis Falls to MGCCC in Third-Place Match
ELLISVILLE — The Northwest Community College women’s tennis team was defeated 5-1 by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the Region 23 third-place match Saturday at Jones College’s Bobcat Tennis Courts.
Northwest (8-9) struggled early, dropping all but one doubles match. Only the No. 1 doubles team of Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco managed to secure a win, winning 8-0 and breaking serve early in the match.
Entering the singles portion with a 2-1 lead, MGCCC gained momentum and maintained it, making it difficult for NWCC to rally. Head coach Ryan Mounce attributed the loss to inconsistent team performance. “Unfortunately, we didn’t perform the way that we had to in spots to win this match,” he said. “To beat a team this talented, you have to play well top to bottom, and we played well in spots, but it’s got to be a group effort. We just didn’t have it as a group today. Sometimes that happens. We’ve got to learn from it.”
Despite the setback, NWCC’s season is not over. The team awaits the draw for the NJCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Tournament, scheduled for May 2-6 in Sumter, South Carolina. Tournament brackets are expected to be announced later in April. Fans can follow the team’s progress through the Ranger social media accounts or at nwccrangers.com.
