NWCC Women’s Basketball Honored After Historic Season
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team earned multiple postseason honors following a historic season. The team posted a 23-9 record and qualified for the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament by winning the Region 23 Championship, according to school officials.
Sophomores Alorian Story and Dekyra Mitchell received All-Region 23 honors. Head coach LaTaryl Williams was named both District and Region 23 Coach of the Year. Williams guided the team to its first 20-win season since 1997-98 and its first national tournament appearance since 2004-05.
Story, a 6-foot forward from Ripley, Mississippi, averaged a double-double with 16.1 points and 13.4 rebounds per game. Her rebounding rate ranked fourth nationally, and she posted 25 double-doubles in 32 games, including 13 consecutive double-doubles at one point. She scored at least 20 points and had 20 rebounds in two games. In the national tournament against Dodge City, she contributed 11 points and 15 rebounds. Story also made the Region 23 All-Tournament Team and earned First Team All-MACCC honors.
Mitchell, a 5-foot-7 guard, led the team with an average of 16.9 points per game. She attempted 260 three-pointers, making 80, and shot 78.9% from the free-throw line. Mitchell also ranked second on the team with 76 steals and scored 14 points in the national tournament game against Dodge City. She received First Team All-MACCC honors as well.
Coach Williams, in his fourth season, led the team to its best record in 28 years. The Rangers finished third in the MACCC, went on a nine-game winning streak, and claimed the Region 23 title. The team averaged 62.3 points per game while allowing an average of 45.8, resulting in a 26.5-point scoring margin, officials said. Williams praised his players’ contributions both on and off the court, noting their academic and athletic achievements.
