Northwest Tennis Teams Secure Close Victories Over Hinds
The Northwest Community College tennis teams secured critical 5-4 victories over Hinds Community College on Friday at the Cleon McKnight Tennis Center in Raymond.
The women’s team, ranked 19th, defeated 16th-ranked Hinds, marking its first win against a higher-ranked opponent. Despite winning only one doubles match, the Rangers rallied in singles, taking four of six courts. Sophomore Meg Daves clinched the match in a three-set battle, dropping only one game in the final set. Freshmen Brooke Kicker and Ava McCain also contributed decisive singles victories.
Similarly, the men’s team, also finishing 5-4, maintained momentum after winning two of three doubles matches. They secured the victory with three singles wins, with Jordan Mitchell and Brady Holliman combining to drop just five games across their matches. Sophomore Miguel Lazaga Rabayna played a pivotal role, winning a tight two-set match to seal the team’s victory.
The women’s doubles saw Hinds’ Rodia Noudogbessi and Daniela Lopez defeat Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco 8-5. In singles, Lopez of Hinds beat NWCC’s Ortiz-Sánchez, while NWCC’s Lopez Chaparro and McCain earned wins. The men’s doubles featured NWCC’s Mitchell and Cooke winning 8-1, with Mitchell also winning his singles match comfortably.
Both teams look ahead to their final MACCC matches of the season, aiming to build on their recent successes. The victories highlight the teams’ resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
