Northwest splits doubleheader with No. 11 Itawamba in defensive battles

Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday against No. 11 Itawamba Community College, winning 2-1 in the opener before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Catelyn Brown threw seven strong innings, allowing only one unearned run and three hits. The Rangers scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out double by Carleigh Calarco. Head coach Chelsea Bramlett praised Brown’s performance and the team’s preparation.

Northwest struggled offensively, managing just two hits through most of the game before breaking through late. Calarco, who contributed a key double, emphasized the importance of focusing on each pitch and staying confident. Brown earned her third win of the season, lowering her ERA to 3.96.

In the second game, both teams combined for nine hits. Itawamba took an early 2-1 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings and added an insurance run in the sixth. Northwest threatened in the final inning but was halted by a batters interference call, ending the game at 3-1.

Despite a complete-game effort from pitcher Meredith Dearman, who allowed five hits and three walks, the Rangers couldn’t generate enough timely hits to overcome the Indians. Bramlett noted that clutch hitting remains an area for improvement as the team continues to develop.

The Rangers will host Meridian Community College on Saturday at the Ranger Softball Fields, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. and a second game at 3 p.m. Bramlett acknowledged the challenging conference schedule, emphasizing that tough matchups are part of MACCC play.
