Northwest splits doubleheader with Itawamba in MACCC baseball
Fulton, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team split a doubleheader with Itawamba Community College on Wednesday, winning the opener 15-13 before falling 10-9 in extra innings in the nightcap, according to the schools.
In the first game, Northwest jumped ahead early with a two-run second inning, sparked by a leadoff double from Mason McMillin and a sacrifice groundout by South McCoy. Itawamba responded with a run in the third and tied the game in the fourth. The game turned in the fifth inning when Northwest scored five runs to take an 8-4 lead, but Itawamba rallied with five runs of its own, including a bases-loaded triple, to go ahead 9-8.
The game remained close through the later innings, with Northwest retaking the lead with a three-run homer from Barrett McKenney in the seventh. Itawamba answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but a late rally in the eighth helped the Rangers secure the win. South McCoy pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and closing out the game for the victory, according to the schools.
In the second game, Northwest opened strong with a five-run first inning, highlighted by an RBI double from McKennon and a three-run homer from McCoy. However, the Indians answered back with three runs in the second and tied the game in the seventh with an RBI double and a home run. The game went into extra innings, where Itawamba scored the winning run on a walk-off double after a late rally, handing Northwest a 10-9 loss.
The loss dropped Northwest to 15-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The team is scheduled to face Meridian Community College in a doubleheader Friday at Skaggs Field, with games set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., according to the schools.
