Northwest Mississippi Tennis Teams Earn First MACCC Road Wins Over Meridian

The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s and men’s tennis teams earned their first MACCC road wins Thursday against Meridian, with the women winning 7-2 and the men 6-3. Both teams previously achieved ranked wins over Southwest Mississippi Community College.

The women’s team defeated No. 23 Meridian, with Claudia Lopez Chaparro rallying from a tough first-set loss to secure a three-set victory. Chaparro lost the opening set in a seven-point tiebreaker but won the next two sets. Other notable performances included doubles wins from Reine Akombo and Aleah McMullan, and singles victories from Lopez Chaparro, Laura Cámara Blanco, Meg Daves, Brooke Kicker, and Ava McCain.

The men’s team also impressed, with singles wins from Holden Cooke, Jordan Mitchell, and Brady Holliman. These players lost only four games combined in their matches, with none losing more than one game in a set. In doubles, Mitchell and Cooke secured an 8-0 win, while Daniel Espin and Jared Escobar narrowly lost their doubles match.

The teams will look to build on their momentum as they prepare for a home match against Coastal Alabama-South on March 5 at 3 p.m.
