Northwest Mississippi softball sweeps East Mississippi in MACCC doubleheader

The No. 18 Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team improved to 16-9 overall and 8-2 in the MACCC with a doubleheader sweep of East Mississippi on Tuesday.

In the first game, Northwest edged East Mississippi 4-2 in eight innings. Both teams exchanged runs early, but Northwest’s pitcher Catelyn Brown kept the Lions mostly in check through six innings. East Mississippi scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, but Northwest rallied in the seventh. Handley McAtee drove in the tying run with a two-out single, sending the game to extras. Meredith Dearman, who earned her 10th win of the season, then retired East Mississippi in the bottom of the eighth, striking out two batters.

The second game saw Northwest jump out to a big lead early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Kate Johnson started for the Rangers and allowed two runs in the first. Northwest added three more runs in the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Carleigh Calarco and Londen Armstrong, extending the lead to 10-2. East Mississippi responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third but was held to three more hits over the final 4.2 innings. Dearman again pitched effectively, allowing no runs and striking out seven in relief for her 11th win. Armstrong’s first career home run in the seventh inning padded the lead, culminating in a 12-6 victory.

The Rangers will travel south this weekend for a conference matchup against No. 24 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
