Northwest Mississippi rallies from 7-0 down to beat No. 15 Parkland 13-9
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team staged a dramatic rally to beat No. 15 Parkland College 13-9 on Thursday at Jim Miles Field. The win concluded the Rangers’ non-conference schedule with a 13-7 record, according to school officials.
The game turned in the seventh inning when Northwest scored seven runs after trailing 7-0 through three innings. The Rangers’ offense ignited with a leadoff double from Walker Sanders, followed by back-to-back singles from South McCoy and Hallas Lawson. A fielding error by Parkland’s third baseman allowed two runs to cross home plate, cutting the lead to 7-2.
In the fifth inning, Northwest continued its comeback. Singles from Lawson and Caleb Doty, along with a walk to Evan Lightsey, loaded the bases. McCoy hit a two-run double that scored two more runs, bringing the score to 7-6. McCoy later scored on a wild pitch, completing a four-run inning. During the rally, Northwest’s coach Mark Carson was ejected after arguing a disputed home run call involving Doty.
Parkland responded with a solo homer in the sixth, but Northwest kept fighting. In the seventh, the Rangers’ offense exploded again. McKenney hit a two-run triple to tie the game, and Doty followed with a three-run homer that gave Northwest an 11-8 lead. Preston Johnson, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings, held off the Cobras despite a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
Reliever Eli Deberry closed out the game in the ninth. Johnson earned his second win of the season as the bullpen combined for 6.2 innings of three-run ball after Northwest’s early deficit. Doty and McCoy led the offense with three hits and three RBIs each. The Rangers finished with 12 hits and eight walks, overcoming early struggles to secure the victory, according to game officials.
