Northwest Mississippi Community College Opens New $14 Million Athletic Performance Facility
Senatobia, Miss. — Northwest Mississippi Community College held a ribbon-cutting Thursday for its new Athletic Performance Facility, a $14 million addition aimed at enhancing athletic and academic programs. College officials, trustees, and student-athletes attended the event, which showcased the 70-yard covered turf practice field and a state-of-the-art cheer and dance practice space.
Northwest President Dr. Michael J. Heindl called the facility a game-changer. He credited the project with providing safe practice surfaces for multiple sports and creating a dedicated space for sports medicine and athletic training for female athletes. “This is the premier facility in the nation for athletics,” he said, thanking trustees for their support.
The new complex spans more than 56,000 square feet and includes locker rooms, offices, and meeting areas. It also serves as the home for the college’s national championship cheer and dance teams, which have combined for 12 titles since 2021. Athletic director Jake Gordon said the facility improves practice conditions regardless of weather, benefiting sports such as football, soccer, baseball, and softball.
College officials emphasized the importance of the facility to recruiting and student success. Head football coach Benji Parker noted that the indoor space offers a respite during bad weather and extreme heat. “It will benefit us big time,” he said. Similarly, James Beattie, head women’s soccer coach, called the facility a national game-changer and unique in the country.
The complex also features an athletic training area exclusively for female athletes, more than doubling previous space. Northwest’s athletic trainers and partners from Athletico highlighted the facility’s role in injury prevention, treatment, and recovery. Justin Ware, Northwest’s head athletic trainer, praised the space’s supportive environment and its artwork celebrating college sports history.
Head cheer coach Brandon Casey and head dance coach Patrice Christian expressed excitement about the new space, emphasizing its impact on recruiting and team success. The facility’s design and features aim to tell the story of Northwest athletics while elevating the college’s competitive standing nationally.
