Northeast Mississippi Community College Awards More Tiger Awards Than Ever Before
The Northeast Mississippi Community College athletic department awarded 12 Tiger Awards during the 2024-25 academic year, the most in the program’s history, according to school officials.
The award is given annually to one student-athlete from each sports program who exemplifies leadership, sportsmanship, and positive conduct. Most recipients are from within Mississippi, particularly from towns in Northeast’s traditional service area, including Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, and Union counties.
Among the recipients, Samuel Curtis of Corinth starred on the baseball team, going 4-0 with 48 strikeouts in 32 appearances. Head coach Richy Harrelson praised Curtis’s work ethic and selfless attitude.
Stephon Thomas of Jackson was a key player for the men’s basketball team, averaging 9.3 points per game and leading in three-point shooting. Coach Cord Wright highlighted Thomas’s leadership and resilience after returning to college after a break.
Anna Greene of Kossuth was recognized for her shooting skills on the women’s basketball team, where she averaged 6.9 points, four rebounds, and 2.6 assists over 61 games. Former coach Chelsey Rhodes commended her dependability and dedication.
Addie Trulove of Kossuth was honored for her contributions to the cheerleading squad, which performed at multiple athletic events and school functions. Head coach Chasity Moore praised her leadership and work ethic.
In cross country, Isaac Vega of New Albany finished second for the men’s team at the national meet with an 8K time of 31:10.1. Eva Null of Kossuth led the women’s team in all seven races, helping the Lady Tigers earn an academic national championship, according to head coach Aaron Hight.
Grant Fleming of New Hope, initially a long snapper, made an impact on the football team as a wide receiver, catching five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in his first season. Head coach Greg Davis highlighted Fleming’s versatility and work ethic.
Jackson Williams of Salem, Alabama, represented Northeast at the national golf championship, finishing tied for 29th with a score of 305 after carding two eagles in the final round. Coach Derek DeVaughn noted Williams’s leadership and team focus.
Leah Walker of Lewisburg led the softball team offensively as a freshman, posting a .429 batting average, 70 hits, and 19 doubles. Head coach Jody Long praised her leadership and work ethic both on and off the field.
John Parker of Corinth was the top male singles player in tennis, earning six wins and competing in doubles for the men’s team. University of Tennessee Southern has recruited him. Allie Beth Gillespie of Booneville contributed to the women’s team’s academic national championship, playing in singles and doubles, according to coach Mark Gilliland.
On the volleyball court, Amberianna Shorter of New Albany recorded 557 digs and 52 aces over two seasons. Head coach Brenda Mayes commended her focus and improvement, highlighting her contributions as a defensive specialist.
The numerous awards reflect Northeast Mississippi Community College’s commitment to recognizing student-athletes’ leadership and positive impact in athletics and their communities, officials said.
