No. 9 Mississippi State beats UAB 5-3 in midweek college baseball game

STARKVILLE, Miss. — No. 9 Mississippi State defeated UAB 5-3 Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field, extending its winning streak and improving to 26-7 this season, according to the school.

The Bulldogs jumped ahead early with two home runs in the first inning. Bryce Chance led off with a double, and Ace Reese followed with a two-run homer to right field. UAB responded with a solo homer in the third, but Jacob Parker answered with a two-run blast, giving Mississippi State a 4-1 lead.

The Blazers chipped away, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to narrow the gap to 4-3. Despite UAB’s efforts, Mississippi State’s pitching staff kept them off the board for the remainder of the game. Starter Chris Billingsley allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings before turning over the game to the bullpen, which held UAB scoreless over the final 5 1/3 frames.

Jack Gleason earned the win in relief, improving to 3-0, while Ben Davis pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Kevin Milewski scored after walking and a subsequent single by Frei.

Mississippi State finished with nine hits, with Reese, Frei, and Vytas Valincius each collecting two. UAB had eight hits but left 11 runners on base, as the Bulldogs’ bullpen repeatedly worked out of trouble to secure the win.

The Bulldogs will host Tennessee in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m., with games broadcast on SEC Network+.
