No. 4 Mississippi State Falls 7-6 to No. 10 Southern Miss in Top 10 Road Matchup
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Mississippi State’s baseball team suffered only its second loss of the season, falling 7-6 to Southern Miss on Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park, according to the schools.
The Golden Eagles (11-1) jumped out to an early lead with a three-run homer by Drey Barrett in the first inning. They added another run in the second on a fielding error and extended their advantage to 5-0 with a solo shot by Seth Smith in the fourth.
The Bulldogs (11-2) began to rally in the fifth, with Noah Sullivan driving in two runs on a double and Reed Stallman adding an RBI single. State took the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs to go up 6-5. Stallman drove in two more with a single, and Ryder Woodson added an RBI single to put Mississippi State ahead.
Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs, capitalizing on two consecutive strikeouts that got away at the plate. The Golden Eagles held on in the final innings, with Camden Clark working the ninth to earn his fourth save.
Mississippi State outhit Southern Miss 9-7, with Stallman finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The Bulldogs’ pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts, highlighted by five consecutive strikeouts from Jack Gleason in relief. Josh Och earned the win for Southern Miss, pitching 1 ⅔ scoreless innings, while Maddox Miller took the loss for the Bulldogs.
