No. 25 Northwest Baseball Sweeps Coahoma in Conference Doubleheader
The No. 25 Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team earned a key conference sweep Tuesday, moving to 22-11 overall and 9-3 in league play. The Rangers tied with No. 3 Jones College for first place in the standings after defeating Coahoma Community College in both games of a doubleheader.
Northwest won the opener 14-6, highlighted by a nine-run fifth inning. The Rangers then rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Coahoma 4-3 in 8 innings in the second game, completing the sweep. Head coach Mark Carson credited the team’s patience and resilience.
In the first game, Derrin Randle earned his first career win, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts. The Rangers capitalized on walks and errors, scoring 12 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. John Whit Snopek contributed a home run, and reliever McCoy secured his fifth save of the season.
In the second game, Barrett Doty started on the mound, limiting Coahoma for most of the game. The Rangers answered with a late rally, scoring twice in the seventh to tie and then winning in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Evan Lightsey. Will Howell and Preston Johnson pitched effectively in relief, with Johnson earning his team-leading fifth win.
Northwest will continue its road schedule Friday against Southwest Mississippi Community College, with games scheduled for 2 and 5 p.m. at the SMCC Baseball Stadium. Updates are available on the school’s website and social media channels.
