No. 25 Lee edges Delta State 4-3 in women’s tennis

The Delta State University women’s tennis team lost 4-3 to No. 25 Lee on Saturday at Cleveland Country Club. It was the Lady Statesmen’s first setback of the season despite a strong showing in singles play.

Lee took an early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Andr Pascual Blanca and Rima Yoshida defeated Delta State’s Amelia Ciesielczyk and Trinity Ly, 6-0, while Jasmine Ibegbulam and Vitoria Maximiliano posted a 6-3 win over Lena Kuehn and Angie Moreno to secure the first point for the Flames.

Delta State responded in singles, winning three matches to stay in contention. Yasmina Mayer fought back from a first-set loss to beat Dwyer Aliyah, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3. Anastasiia Iakovlieva added a win at No. 4, defeating Vitoria Maximiliano in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Angie Moreno also earned a victory at No. 6 singles, beating Jasmine Ibegbulam 6-0, 6-4.

Lee clinched the match with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles. Rima Yoshida outlasted Ciesielczyk in three sets, while Pascual Blanca secured a straight-set win over Ly. Mar Fernanda Duarte sealed the victory for the Flames with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Kuehn at No. 5 singles.

With the loss, Delta State moves to 5-1 on the season, while Lee improves to 2-0. The Lady Statesmen will travel next weekend to face Southwest Baptist University at Southern Arkansas University.
