No. 20 Northwest Mississippi softball earns two run-rule victories over Coahoma
The Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team, ranked No. 20, secured a pair of run-rule victories over Coahoma Community College on Tuesday at the Ranger Softball Fields. The wins improved the Rangers’ record to 19-10 overall and 11-3 in the MACCC standings.
In the first game, Catelyn Brown pitched a strong game, allowing only two hits and one unearned run over five innings. The Rangers exploded offensively early, scoring nine runs in the first inning and cruising to a 12-2 victory. The offensive outburst included four errors by Coahoma, along with three triples, two doubles, and multiple singles.
Northwest’s offense was led by Ava Claire Rhoden, who reached on an error and scored the first run, and Lindsey Gillis, who contributed a triple. The team added runs in each subsequent inning, with key hits from Emma Jennings and Carleigh Calarco. Kate Johnson finished the game in the circle, allowing just one run and retiring six of the last seven batters to secure the win. Brown earned her sixth win of the season, her fourth consecutive.
In the second game, pitcher Kate Johnson continued her success, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out four batters. The offense capitalized on Coahoma errors and timely hitting, including a two-run homer by Sela Mancini. The Rangers scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, prompting the run rule and ending the game 8-0 after five innings.
Reliever Meredith Dearman closed out the game, striking out two batters in relief. Johnson earned her first career win, allowing just one run over six innings. Johnson praised her teammates and emphasized the team’s strong defense and pitching staff.
Northwest will host Southwest Mississippi Community College on Friday for two games, which carry significant implications in the MACCC standings. The Rangers currently sit tied for third place, trailing Pearl River and Copiah-Lincoln in the race for the top spots.
