No. 20 Montevallo Sweeps Delta State in Softball Doubleheader

Montevallo swept Delta State in a Gulf South Conference softball doubleheader Friday at University Field. The Falcons won the first game 13-0 in five innings, then took the second game 4-0.

In the opener, Montevallo scored six runs in the first inning and added six more in the fifth, including a grand slam from Riley Daniel. The Falcons collected 11 hits and hit three home runs. Delta State managed three hits, from Maeve Lavoy, Kyleigh Wheaton, and Maya Mills. Freshman Ellie Cox took the loss, dropping to 1-7, while Kinsley Byrd earned the win with three hitless innings.

In the second game, Delta State’s defense kept Montevallo off the board until the sixth inning, but the Falcons capitalized on two defensive errors to score three unearned runs. Makayla Peters drove in an additional run with an RBI single. Both teams had seven hits, but Delta State was unable to score. Joryie McKnight led the Lady Statesmen with a 2-for-3 performance. Maeve Lavoy pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with one strikeout, taking her season record to 6-8.

Delta State will continue Gulf South Conference play next weekend, traveling to Nashville to face Trevecca Nazarene University in a three-game series starting Friday at 1 p.m. Central Time.
