No. 20 Montevallo beats Delta State 8-1 in softball opener

The University of Montevallo softball team defeated Delta State University 8-1 Thursday in a Gulf South Conference game at University Field.

The Falcons (31-6, 14-5 GSC) scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to build an early lead. Taylor Rogers hit two home runs and finished with three hits and three RBIs for Montevallo.

Delta State (12-22, 6-13 GSC) scored its only run in the fourth inning. Carly Dunigan singled and Calli McConnell doubled to start the frame. Maya Mills drove in the team’s only run with an RBI single, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Dunigan added two hits and scored, while McConnell also recorded multiple hits.

Maeve Lavoy pitched all seven innings for Delta State, allowing 11 hits and striking out one. Taylor Lloyd earned the win for Montevallo, allowing one run on eight hits with three strikeouts in a complete game.

The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday at noon at University Field.
