The Mississippi University for Women men’s tennis team defeated LaGrange College 6-1 on Friday in LaGrange, Georgia. The win improves MUW’s season record to 2-2.
The Owls’ victory came after losing both fall matches to LaGrange. The team’s lineup was revamped for this match, which helped them secure revenge in the spring meeting.
MUW dominated in doubles, sweeping all three matches. Jorge Ortiz and Sandro Giangregorio won at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 shutout. Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 2, as did Alvaro Bardales and Ian Costabel at No. 3.
In singles play, LaGrange’s only win came at No. 5. MUW secured straight-set victories at Nos. 1 through 4. Ortiz won 6-2, 6-2; Giangregorio topped his opponent 6-0, 6-4; Garcia won 6-0, 6-1; and Fernandez took his match 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Jonathan Mitchell earned his first collegiate singles win at No. 6, defeating LaGrange’s Nic Bodin 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.
